Wrestling: Are you in it to win it?

Written by: Liliana Teapila

Recently my team has been introduced to a new coach and new wrestlers. The new wrestlers are adapting to a new lifestyle while the other wrestlers are adapting to the new coaching style. I want to spread out the perspectives of wrestling coaches to help future or new wrestlers understand why they do what they do, and what the wrestlers should expect from this sport.

Wrestling is more than just a physical sport, it's mentally challenging. My coach told me “wrestling teaches you discipline, structure, and personal accountability”. You’re going to deal with pressure, exhaustion and the consequences of your own actions in a one-on-one environment. It's going to build confidence and the ability to set and achieve goals.

On the wrestling mat it's just you and your opponent for 6 minutes. There are 3 periods, and each one is 2 minutes long, unless you pin your opponent in that time period, then it's over. 1st period shows who's more technical, the 2nd period shows who's got more stamina, and the 3rd period is the blood round; it shows who wants it more.
Lastly, I want to talk about the coaches. Wrestling coaches are more than just coaches. They're your mentor, the person who's literally in your corner at all times. If you actually listen to them, you'll find that really helpful when on the mat but besides that point they are here to teach you and help you go places you never thought you could achieve. Coach Flatt told Coach Mo that he's got girls that can do amazing things. He sees our potential even when people doubt us. As Coach Mo said, “Show up, learn something so you can earn something”.
